Chapter Nine

Luke focused once Josie left. He had plenty of work on his plate for the day. Not only did he want to follow up with his home security company, he needed to get a full update from his staff on the aftereffects of the DoS attack. There was still the day-to-day business to be concerned about. Afire was an operational company, even though the hack had taken most of his attention recently. He had meetings, a couple of one-on-one sessions with the new guys, and he’d promised Eric a status report.

As company CEO, Luke’s old college buddy was heavily involved in what had been going on, and was working on the business impacts of the hack—a task Luke didn’t envy. The big boss wasn’t going to be happy when he relayed Kylie’s opinion of the previous cybersecurity team. How long had the company been vulnerable to this type of penetration? Had other, smaller incursions already happened?

Luke shot a glance out into the bay to check that she was set. It felt good to have her here, within eyeshot. Until they figured out what the hell was going on, that was right where he wanted her.

His computer let out a ding, notifying him of the daily “war room” meeting on the hack. He checked the conference room number and folded the laptop under his arm. He’d rather be digging into the video of his security feed, but maybe somebody else had information that could help identify their hidden aggressor. One way or the other, he was going to find the guy.

And stop him.

It was late afternoon when a knock came at Luke’s office door. It shook him out of his thoughts and made him pull away from his computer. The cramp that screamed from his lower back told him he’d been in the position for too long. “Hey, Christopher.”

“You got a minute?” his tech lead asked.

Luke closed the lid on his laptop and swiveled around in his chair. “Sure. Come on in. What’s up?”

“I just wanted to talk to you about something.”

Luke was surprised when Christopher closed the door behind him. Closed doors around this place were reserved for performance reviews, heavy gossip, or really sensitive work discussions. He braced himself. Had the team made progress? Or had they discovered something that made things worse?

Chris sat down with one foot planted on the ground and his opposite ankle propped up on his knee. He settled his laptop on the human triangle he’d created and clapped a hand over his foot to keep it still. The bent knee, though, was bobbing.

Damn. The guy was agitated about something.

“Is this about Kylie?” Luke asked, biting the bullet so his employee wouldn’t have to. He didn’t want to force anyone to work with the boss’s girlfriend, even if she was more than qualified. “I just thought you could use more help right now. It’s a temporary thing—unless you tell me it’s not working out.”

Christopher’s chin jerked up. “Kylie?”

The knee stopped bouncing, and lines crumpled the developer’s forehead.
